GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: To sign up for classes, call the Art Center Monday – Saturday, M-W-F 10 AM – 5 PM. T-Th 9 AM – 5 PM, Sat. 9AM – 1PM. Sign up early and pay fees two weeks before classes begin. Mail in checks or bring them to the Art Center. Make checks payable to the Fountain City Art Center or “F.C.A.C.” You will receive a full refund and be notified by the instructor or F.C.A.C. staff if the class is cancelled. Prices listed indicate nonmember/ member of the Art Center. (Membership forms are available at the Center or can be mailed if you call and make a request.) GIFT CERTIFICATES ARE AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES FOR ALL CLASSES.

POTTERY CLASSES:

“Handbuilding with Clay;” instructor, Edna Harvey ( 688-7757). Sign up any time! Youth 8 years and up; Adults, all ages and skill levels. 5 weeks. Cost: $140/$125, all materials and kiln firing included. Come by the Center and see Edna’s beautiful work on display in the “Gallery” section. She teaches a class with a very personalized approach which encourages creativity. For more information or to develop your individual class schedule with Edna, phone her directly.

“Traditional Wheel Clay;” instructor, Roger Bench (705-4683). Roger’s class is for 5 weeks and offers BEGINNERS the opportunity to create with clay using the traditional wheel throwing method. Cost: $140/$125, all materials and kiln firing included. Roger’s work is also on display in the “Gallery” section. We are excited to offer both approaches to working with clay! Roger will accept adults and children 8 years or older; you have the CHOICE of a 5 week session that meets on Monday OR Tuesday evenings from 6 PM – 8 PM. Call the Art Center to sign up today! Note: Roger and Edna will continue to sign-up new students as requests come in throughout the year.

OIL PAINTING:

ADULTS (OR HOMESCHOOLERS 14 YEARS AND UP)

“Painting with Oils;” instructor, Aurora Harrison-Bull (992-0163). Two times are available for each session. You may sign up for the morning class, 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM OR the afternoon class, 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM, both on Thursdays. The class last 6 weeks. A materials list is available at the Art Center or by mail if requested. Space is limited in both classes, so sign up EARLY!

Students love Aurora’s approach. She continuously gives personalized instruction and demonstrates on her own canvas. Cost: $95/$80.

1st Session: Feb. 28 - April 3 3rd Session: May 22 - June 26

2nd Session: April 10 - May 15 4th Session: July 3 – Aug. 7

 

WATERCOLOR CLASSES:

NEW!! (Adults or youth 14 & up)

“Beginner to Intermediate Watercolor Class;” instructor, Maureen Lucas and Tommy Sue Lepper. Both Maureen and Tommy Sue are very accomplished watercolor artists. The class size will be limited to 10. Students will receive more attention from 2 instructors, great for a beginner in watercolor! (If the class is very small, Tommy Sue may not be team teaching with Maureen.) This class will be held on Monday afternoons from 1PM-4PM Cost: $95/$80. Materials list available at the Art Center.

1st Session: Feb. 25 – Mar. 31

2nd Session: April 14 - May 19

“Beginner to Intermediate Watercolor Class;” instructor, B.J. Clark (690-5607).

1st Session: April 21, May 5, 19, June 2, 9,16.

2nd Session: June 30, July 7, July 21, July 28, Aug. 4, 18.

All sessions are Mondays from 5PM -8 PM. B.J. is well-known in Knoxville, especially for her historical paintings and prints.

Appropriate for adults. Cost $95/$80. Materials list available at the Art Center.

 

“Intermediate Watercolor Class;” instructor, Mary Secrist (922-1391.)

1st Session: Feb. 28 – Apr. 3.

2nd Session:Apr. 17, 24, May 1, 8, 15, 22.

All sessions are on Thursdays from 6 PM – 9 PM.

Cost: $95/$80, materials list available at the Art Center. Come by the Art Center and see Mary’s award winning work! She has great patience, great technique, and great insights for her students’ progress! As with all our watercolor classes, space is limited. At this time, Mary’s class is waiting-list only, but she is considering opening a second class soon.

 

“Wonderful World of Watercolor;” instructor, Mary Baumgartner (971-4097.) Both classes are from 9:30AM-12:30PM

1st session: Tues., Apr. 15 – June 3.

2nd session: Sat. Apr. 12 – June 7. (no class on May 24)

Advanced Level Students Only. Mary’s class sessions are for 8 weeks. HOWEVER, this class for adults is waiting-list only! Once students enter the class, they don’t want to quit. Materials list is available at the Art Center. Cost: $135/$115. We suggest that you go ahead and get on the waiting list, but don’t hesitate to take one of the other watercolor classes which are EXCELLENT!

(Current wait time is at LEAST one year for those just getting on the list.)

 

DRAWING, CHARCOAL, PASTELS, MIXED MEDIA:

“Portrait and Figure Drawing;” instructor: Gifford “Nick” Nicolaides

1st Session: Mar. 29-May 3

2nd Session: May 17, 24, June 7, 14, 21, 28.

All sessions will be held on Saturdays from 10:30AM-12:30PM. Appropriate for adults and advanced high school level students. Cost: $115/$100; includes models’ fees. Work with a model in every class as you explore how to create better portrait and figure drawings. You will cover traditional old masters and modern methods, including form, color, and more importantly, composition. Media may include pastels, charcoal, pencil, and gouache. Lessons change every week throughout the year, and students will receive plenty of individualized instruction.

 

“Basic Drawing Technique;” instructor: Gifford “Nick” Nicolaides

All art Instructors agree that a course in drawing is a fundamental and essential part of art education that many of their students have, unfortunately, skipped. A good drawing is the most important part of most portraits and still life paintings. We have added this class at the request of some of our instructors would get them in the habit of practicing this very basic but crucial skill. You have only to look at the sketchbooks of all of the great masters from the past to know that they started with drawing and kept it up throughout their lives.

6 weeks, Tuesday afternoons from 1-3PM. Cost: $95/ $80. Materials: A large sketch pad, a board to support your pad on the easel, no. 2 pencils, and a kneaded eraser.

1st Session: Mar. 25 - Apr. 29.

2nd Session: May 13, 20, 27, June 3,10,17.

 

Children’s Class for Ages 6-12 years:

“Enjoy Your Creative Side,” instructor, Sandi VanWinkle

Students will use a variety of materials and each lesson will be different. Sandi’s emphasis is on self-expression, self-confidence, and using the imagination. She also brings in short lessons on specific artists from the past so that students will become familiar with a range of artistic styles. Some of the materials used in class are: water-based paints, molding clay, pencils and markers, construction paper, and found objects. Materials are included.

Cost: $85/$75; maximum class size: 10; 6 weeks.

Date and time: Tuesdays, 3:15-4:45PM

1st Session: March 25- May 6.

2nd Session: May 20 - June 24.

 

Jewelry Workshop:

“Fused Dichroic Glass Jewelry;” instructor, Penny Berridge (851-8560).

You have a choice of 6 classes this Winter Session, each lasting 3 days. This workshop offers students the chance to make beautiful one of a kind fused glass jewelry. Learn to cut glass and fire it in a kiln. You will make 5 to 7 pieces of eye catching fused glass creations. All supplies will be furnished by Penny. If you have questions, please feel to call Penny directly. Cost: $75/$68. Come by and see all of Penny’s beautiful jewelry and other glass creations!

BOOKMAKING:

“Lotsa Books;” instructor, Bob Meadows

This course is an introduction to the fascinating realm of handmade books. Take cardboard, Asian & other art papers, thread, paste, and more; transform them into one-of-a-kind books! Make 5 to 6 hard and soft cover books, some with hidden compartments. No experience necessary, just lots of imagination. Age: adults or 18 yrs. and up.

All students must bring scissors, craft knife, pencil, cutting mat, and a metal or metal-edged ruler. Cost: $125/ $115 (this includes the $25 materials cost.)

1st Session: March 11 – April 15, 6 weeks, Tuesdays, 6:30-9PM

2nd Session: June 11 - July 16, 6 wks., Wed. 6:30-9PM.

“Advanced Bunches of Books!” (Cost and materials are the same as “Lotsa Books!! ” listed above.)

1st Session: March 10-April 14, 6 wks, Monday mornings, 10AM-12:30PM.

2nd Session: June 10 – July 15, 6 wks., Tues.evenings, 6:30-9PM

 

NEW!!
“ACTING CLASSES,” Instructor Robert McDonald III.

This new class will meet twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings From 5 – 6:30PM and lasts 6 weeks. Robert has planned 2 projects for the class 3 wks. per project. The weather should be perfect in May or June for a post class play production, probably in the Park. All students will be involved in the play. Cost: $50/$45

1st Session: April 1 – May 8, (12 classes)

EXERCISE CLASS:
Every Monday and Wednesday afternoon from 4 - 4:45PM:

Edna Harvey will be conducting “P.A.C.E.”, a gentle way to exercise at your pace and at your strength level. The class is $10 per month, payable to Edna. Bring your own small hand weights if you like. You may reach Edna at: 688-7757.

 

NEW 2008 FCAC WORKSHOPS!

“Block Prints Meet Artists’ Books;” instructors: printmaker Gay Bryant and bookbinder Bob Meadows team up!

Date: Saturday, April 12, 9:30AM-4PM with a lunch break.

Cost: $120/$110; maximum class size: 10; must be 18 yrs. and up. No previous print or book making experience is necessary. Students will learn print making basics by carving their own design and making multiple prints. Then the group will use the prints to create a book that will showcase the prints from each member of the class. We will also make simple boxes to hold the books. If time allows, we may make greeting cards using the prints!

Materials: Bring a pencil, scissors, a craft knife, a metal edged ruler, and a cutting mat.

 

“PORTRAIT (or Landscape or Seascape) PAINTING IN OILS,” for adults or youth 14 and up.

Instructor, Jon Houglum, visiting artist from Franklin, NC.

Students will finish a portrait (or a landscape) in two sessions of the workshop. These workshops were enormously popular last year, so we’d like to offer students who missed them an opportunity to work with Jon Houglum. Payment is due 2 weeks prior to the workshop you are attending.

Each workshop lasts two days, Fri. & Sat. mornings, from 9:30 AM – 1:30 PM. Cost: $140/ $125. Materials list available at the Art Center.

Workshop 2008 dates: Mar. 7-8; Apr.4-5; & May 2-3.

 

“PASTELS,” for adults (or youth 18 and up)

Instructor: Paul deMarrais

We are very excited about offering this pastel workshop by quite possibly the best pastel artist in the area. Paul has many techniques and tips to offer!

Cost: $75/$70. Basic set of pastels only materials needed for workshop.

Workshops are held on Sat., from 9:30AM to 4:30PM with an hour break for lunch.

Date of next workshop: February 16, 2008.
